Viernes Santo, Sábado Santo and Domingo de Resurrección (Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday) are all national public holidays, with additional days being given as local holidays. There are long processions through the streets with pasos - religious floats and sculptures. Religious statues are carried along on the shoulders of the cofrades, members of the cofradías or lay brotherhoods that organize the processions. These are accompanied by penitentes and nazarenos generally wearing long hooded robes. The activities of the week can be more or less religious in nature, depending on the region. In Spain (especially in Andalusia) there are spectacular nocturnal processions with “pasos”, which are floats carried through the streets on the shoulders of bearers, with huge banks of candles and dramatic sculptures of Jesus - crucified or resurrected - or the Virgin Mary, dressed in elaborate, jewel-studded costumes. The “pasos” are solemnly escorted by “cofrades”, hooded members of a Catholic brotherhood or “cofradía”, who march in step to the beat of a drum. Some walk barefoot and flagellate themselves as a sign of Christian repentance, while the atmosphere on other processions can be much more festive.* * *f week;entre semana during the week, midweek* * *semana nf: week* * *semana n week -

14 gateado
(Sp. model spelled same [gateáðo] < gato 'cat' < Late Latin cat-tum, 'undomesticated cat' plus the derivative suffix - eado)A dun-colored horse with stripes on its legs and shoulders, similar to the zebra dun. Santamaría indicates that it refers to a light or blond-colored horse with a blackish stripe along the ridge of its back and similar transversal stripes on its ribs and hindquarters. Islas defines it as a pattern observed on the legs of many bay-colored mules that consists of dark transversal stripes on the shoulders, knees, thighs, and hocks. The pattern is similar to that on many brown-colored cats, which is the origin of the term. -

20 manga
Clark: 1834. A poncho or cloak used to protect the upper body against rain and cold weather. Referenced in the DRAE as a piece of cloth that covers the body from the shoulders almost to the feet. It may also refer to a rubber cape used to protect one from the rain while riding horseback. Santamaría concurs with the latter definition, and notes that it generally is fastened at the front and is known more commonly as a manga de hule in Mexico. A cowpoke needed some protection against the sudden cloudbursts or soggy days when the rain, wind, and mud created difficult working conditions. A manga, poncho, or waterproof jacket served that purpose.
